Christmas dinner

Celebrating 2024 and Embracing the Year of Quantum

by Luis Fernandez Martinez

On Saturday, at a Brazilian restaurant, we kicked off the new year with a wonderful dinner. The beef may have been a bit undercooked for some group members, but the experience itself was perfectly “cooked” with great conversations.

Looking back, 2024 was a milestone year for the EQE group: we moved into our newly renovated lab space in February, began assembling our first vacuum system in April, and observed the first light emitted from cold atoms in June. We successfully installed and frequency-stabilized laser beams spanning wavelengths from 300 nm to 1.5 μm, using them to cool, trap, and excite our atoms!

As we step into 2025, the Year of Quantum, we are excited to assemble a second vacuum system and work on generating large-scale atom arrays. Our plans include exploring the Yb-Rb Rydberg pair interactions and demonstrating novel approaches to integrate single Yb atoms with Rb atomic clouds, aiming to achieve enhanced quantum control and detection.

Beyond the lab, we have enjoyed as a team through football games, ping-pong matches, and BBQs. We are looking forward to even more fun and memorable group events in the year ahead!
